Joseph Austen was an Irish pewterer between 1790 - 1825 as referenced in David Halls Book of Irish Pewter Hallmarks (see our last photo). Pewter Touch Mark is also referenced in Cotterell's Book of Old Pewter (#152). The books were not specific if the mark was used when Joseph Austen was solo, or when his Sons joined the firm around 1822, But this is a distinct pewter stamp mark (Cartouche) registered only by this family and well documented in many books (being amongst one of stamps he used). We estimate this Austen piece to be about circa 1820.
The Mark on this piece is very clear showing the unique slanted edge stamp and unique style crown on the top - ONLY used by the Austen Family. (compare for yourself in our last photo in this listing). As an original, it does contains Government Inspections stamp marks on the lip rim as proof of originality (imitations measures do not have any inspection mark on the rim). This Irish Haystack is stamped 1 Noggin on the front. Estimated Late 18thc to Early 19th Century.
