Ireland: Patrick Padraic Pearse Flag/Badge, circa 1918, Dublin: PEARSE MEMORIAL FUND. Two layers of cream paper, printed in black, folded to take a pin. Some slight rust from the (original) long pin, otherwise still very nice. The flag measures 1-1/4" long X 7/8" wide and showing Padraic Pearse and (on left) his brother Willie Pearse, also executed in 1916. He was Commander in Chief of the Irish Volunteers in the 1916 Easter Week Rebellion in Dublin.
A signatory (and subsequently reader) of the historic Proclamation, he joined James Connolly on Easter Monday morning in leading the Volunteers from Liberty Hall to the General Post Office, O'Connell Street, they fought for several days before surrendering on Saturday 29th April. He was the first to be executed, at Kilmainham Jail on 3rd May 1916.In 1908, Padraic Pearse had founded St. Enda's School in Rathmines, Dublin, intending that it should be distinctively Irish, yet bilingual and very modern. This paper badge/flag was issued a year or so after the 1916 Rising, by his widow and others trying to raise the funds needed to keep St. Please check out the scans and grade for yourself plus.
